SDCI Directors describe “Strategic Foundations of Science Diplomacy” in Letter published in Science on 9 October 2025
“With capacities to build common interests, science diplomacy as a “language of hope” will continue… to inspire new forms of collective action.”
The 21 August 2025 Editorial in Science about “Rewiring Science Diplomacy” offer a timely framework for rethinking science diplomacy in an era of renewed geopolitical competition. However, describing earlier efforts as merely “aspirational” risks underestimating their strategic value, and overemphasizing transactionalism could undermine the foundations of international cooperation, as elaborated in the response from the SDCI Directors.
